TWL: cannoli, a great conjunction, vaccines, and hints of a plateau

My annual holiday party met online on Sunday to make cannolis. States represented: NY, MA, VA, NC, SC, and CO. Attendees included: two sisters, four sisters-in-law, three friends who feel like sisters, one mom, five daughters, two sons-in-law, four nephews, four grandbabies, two dogs, one husband (who helped!), one smoke alarm, one spill, dozens of cookies, laughing, a huge mess described as though a squirrel dragged a bag of flour through the kitchen, wine, sugar, ricotta, chocolate, and me. I enjoyed the whole day.

Saturn and Jupiter met in the sky in a Great Conjunction at sunset on Winter Solstice. What a beautiful night.

Someone I love got her first shot of the COVID-19 vaccine. Finally have a reason to hope, and physical relief.

COVID-19 cases in the US are still soaring. The governor of my state is among the new 1.5 million infected Americans.

The Thanksgiving surge may have plateaued just in time for the Christmas and New Year surges to take over.

Here is a safe plan: Stay home. Meet in small groups. Stay home. Wear masks. Stay home. Meet online. Stay home. Don’t eat out. Stay home. Watch a movie. Stay home. Walk your dog. Stay home. Bake some cookies. Stay home. Make a wreath. Stay home. Play a game (flip a water bottle, stack 15 cups and time yourself, roll a golf ball to the edge of a table, play swords with empty wrapping paper rolls). Stay home. Read a book. Stay safe.

  1. Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas, Laura, and best wishes for an amazing 2021. I’m so grateful to have made it this far without stumbling, and thank you for being a cheerleader for acting responsibly and being community-focused during this crazy time. Your posts have been a welcome gift this year, and although I imagine you often feel like no one is paying attention, please know that your steadfastness has been a beacon for many of us.
